The Plastic Problem

The U.S. produced 44 million tons of plastic waste in 2019.

According to the OECD, around 9 percent of all plastic waste generated globally is recycled, with only 5 percent being recycled in the United States, and the majority ending up in landfills and waterways.

We work with winemakers, fruit growers, processors, and waste management facilities to transform their waste into PHA biopolymers.

California alone produces 300 million tons of wine grapes annually, as stated in the 2019 California Crop Report. It is proven by researchers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal that up to 80 percent of this grape biomass can be converted into usable PHA biopolymers.

To maximize PHA yield from grape pomace, we aim to genetically engineer microorganisms using CRISPR-Cas9 technology.

This project advances materials study through the novel use of waste materials at scale, providing a platform for feedstocks beyond grape pomace and creating revenue sources for fruit growers across sectors.

We offer a pathway to detoxify supply chains, reduce reliance on imported plastics, and transform waste into valuable resources. The fermentation industry is growing 8% year-over-year. Our vision is to operate small to medium fermentation facilities in partnership with waste processing sites and growers.
